But it meant a great deal of money would come to him in order to pull together his estate again. In fact, there was enough to restore and invest too. The money would also help to ensure his brother might live 44 EDITH LAYTON to marry one day too. The rest would help Ian to clear his other properties and cleanse the Sutcombe name. He’d sell his soul for that. And perhaps, he thought, he had. “Done,” he told Baker when he returned to his rented rooms. He pulled off his jacket, stripped off his neckcloth and threw it on a chair.

She wondered how such an aristocratic fellow as the marquis kept his dignity in light of the circumstances, and admired him for it. Or was it that he had no problems because he had no dignity beyond that which every nobleman must show? Hannah was glad for the coach’s interior darkness. She didn’t want anyone seeing her face. She was no longer sure of her decision. Making a decision in the full flush of first mortification was very different from trying to live with it when your emotions calmed down.

But once Hannah had removed her cape and settled into her chair, high up in a red trimmed box to the side of the theater, she at last had a chance to relax, and look down—into a sea of uplifted faces that all seemed to be staring back at her. She shrank back into her seat, blinded by the sparkling crowd. “They’re staring at everyone,” Ian remarked. “From the benches to the boxes. It’s why they come here. Some listen to the music. Most disregard it. Some sleep. The company’s the thing here, not the opera company.
