Ball (1992) working with adolescents found that students preferred orally based patterns—narrative interspersion and circumlocution—while Troutman-Robinson (1987) saw a heightened use of direct address in African American middle-school students’ compositions. Taylor (1991) developed an approach to teaching writing to AAVE students which was grounded in a bi-dialectal philosophy. She focused on acknowledgment of AAVE as a legitimate dialect, ethnosensitivity, trust building, the reduction of AAVE surface features in student writing, and attention to surface feature differences between AAVE and LWC (Language of Wider Communication).

Black survival voices are tied to these experiences of subordination, dominance, cultural memories of Africa, and the desire to be free. These experiences are also factors in the double and multiple consciousnesses characteristic of the linguistic and cultural development of many African Americans.
