Example text

The theory I have been 36 PETER FORREST expounding is that, excepting the holes, the universe is God’s body. Does God also have a non-physical mind or soul? I judge such a soul to be redundant, and so consider my conception pantheistic. There is, however, another technical sense in which, I hold, God is not the Universe. There are some properties that God has essentially that the Universe has accidentally. For God is essentially powerful. But I believe that God could abdicate all power by making the multiverse just consist of one universe.

A survey of theories of the Self is beyond the scope of this chapter (see Brook and Raymont 2014), so I shall sketch an account that coheres well with my emphasis on proprioception and does not seem open to objections. I recognize that some PAM enthusiasts will consider the idea of a spiritual Self a superior explanation, and hence have reason to reject Personal Pantheism. That said, my preferred account is to learn from Kant. By way of excuse I note that this is not as bad as my Hegel moments.

1 The Objection from Synchronic Disunity The account given of the unity of consciousness requires the spatiotemporal world of which God is aware by proprioception to be unified. Yet the increase in determinacy account of action implies that this world is a multiverse consisting of many rather different universes. How can it be unified? I have argued elsewhere that we may consider the multiverse not as the sum of disconnected universes, as in Lewis’s modal realism, but as a hyper-universe made up of the many universes glued together (Forrest 2015).
