Bettelheim (1960) and Levi (1958) have recorded how those with firm belief systems who were able to detach themselves from what was going on around them were the most likely to survive in the concentration camps. Whatever the reason, a certain detachment from external reality existed within psychoanalysis in the 1930s through the 1960s, especially in its Kleinian form-an issue with which Bowlby struggled over the ensuing decades.
