Beginning in the late 1800s, presses brought together artists and writers and published their collaborations in elegant editions. In the 1960s and 1970s, that tradition expanded to define books by artists as unique works of art. Today, hundreds of colleges, universities and art centers offer book-arts programs. Interest in book arts continues to grow largely due to the fact that it can encompass virtually any other art form, providing the opportunity to create added meaning in an intimate structure.

You can vary the opacity by changing the paint-to-paste ratio; the more paint there is, the more opaque the color will be. You can also make the paint thicker by using less water in the wheat paste. By painting on a large sheet of paper then cutting or tearing it into smaller sizes, you can create interesting and unexpected compositions on the resulting pieces. Use of the computer in Steps 3 and 4 is optional. You can also overprint with one of the other printmaking processes if desired. Consider the size of the paper, its grain and how you can maximize the number of pages with the spine of the book parallel to the grain.
