The high hardness and low contact resistance of the 10% and 20% iridium alloys renders them particularly suitable for low-current low-pressure applications.
When the contact must form a link in a magnetic circuit it is best employed in the magnetically soft, disordered, condition. Because of their resistance to corrosion, cobalt-platinum magnets can be employed in flow meters handling corrosive liquids and for the magnetic jigs used in electroplating baths. Whatever application is envisaged the alloy is most effectively employed with a length to diameter ratio of 0. 7. This must be compared with a ratio of 5 for Alnico V and 2 for Alnico VII. Although cobalt-platinum in the magnetically soft condition is ductile and readily worked it becomes very hard when heat treated for optimum magnetic properties.
