Finding Her Path: Alaina’s Journey to Independence

Before Alaina connected with The Arc Alliance, she described things as “a total disaster.” She struggled to find the right supports and often found herself feeling overwhelmed and stressed at times. With encouragement from her mother—who Alaina calls her biggest advocate—Alaina was introduced to The Arc Alliance and later met her Supports Coordinator, Ashley Miller.
From the start, Ashley became a steady source of guidance and compassion. “Ashley has been the biggest help,” Alaina shared. “She’s always there to talk when I need her—even on her days off.”
Her SC worked closely with Alaina to set her up with a waiver, ensuring she received the services she needed. When challenges arose with staffing, Ashley helped Alaina find new, supportive team members who truly understood her needs. Through The Arc Alliance, Alaina was also connected with Community Integrated Services (CIS), where a job developer helped her explore her interests and find meaningful employment.
Today, Alaina proudly works at the Philadelphia Zoo in food and maintenance services through Aramark. She started her position in July 2025 and says she absolutely loves it. “My coworkers are like one big happy family,” she said with a smile. Her manager has shared that Alaina is doing really well in her role—and we couldn’t be prouder.
Outside of work, Alaina loves watching Law & Order, spending time at Starbucks with her boyfriend, and doing arts and crafts. One of her favorite memories with Ashley was painting pottery together. She also finds comfort and companionship in her emotional support animal, a Yorkie named Bell. “She’s like my baby,” Alaina said. “I love her so much.”
With Ashley’s support and her own determination, Alaina has built a life filled with stability, community, and joy.
