Helping Jaxson Take His Next Steps

When you meet Three-year-old Jaxson, it’s impossible not to smile. His mom, Nicole, describes him perfectly: “He’s pure sunshine.” Whether he’s playing outside with his big brother, kicking around a soccer ball, or saying hi to every person he passes in the grocery store, Jaxson’s joyful personality shines through in everything he does.

Jaxson was born with Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) and began receiving Early Intervention services from The Arc Alliance to support his speech, physical, and motor development. He worked with an incredible team—Physical Therapist Miss Ellen, Speech Therapist Miss Lori, Occupational Therapist Miss Adriana, and Special Instructor Miss Pam—who have been by his side every step of the way.

When Jaxson first started Early Intervention, his biggest challenges were his delayed speech and physical milestones. He didn’t begin walking until he was two years old. But when he finally did—taking his very first independent steps on the beach—his mom’s first call was to Miss Ellen. “She celebrated right alongside us,” Nicole said. “If it wasn’t for Ellen and the advice and support she gave, he wouldn’t be where he is now.”

In speech therapy, Miss Lori never gave up on Jaxson. She provided creative strategies and consistent encouragement, helping Jaxson’s Parents feel confident continuing speech practice at home so that progress could continue between sessions.

Through occupational therapy, Miss Adriana helped Jaxson overcome feeding challenges, including delays in chewing and swallowing. Her approach was gentle and supportive, focusing on small, achievable steps that made a big difference. She created a calm, encouraging environment that made therapy feel manageable and motivating for both Jaxson and his family.

And through special instruction, Miss Pam helped Jaxson gain independence and build skills for preschool readiness. She suggested small but meaningful changes at home—like adding a hook at Jaxson’s level so he could hang his backpack and a basket for his shoes—to help him practice responsibility in everyday routines.

Today, Jaxson can walk independently and continues to make progress toward new goals like jumping and expanding his vocabulary. His confidence grows every day as he keeps up with his big brother, plays with his new puppy, and enjoys snuggling on the couch with his mom to watch Bluey, Mickey Mouse, or Cars.

Nicole shared how grateful she is for The Arc Alliance and the dedicated team who helped Jaxson reach these milestones. She said their guidance, encouragement, and partnership gave her the tools and confidence to support her son’s growth—something she couldn’t have done alone.

With the support of his loving family and dedicated Early Intervention team, Jaxson’s future is bright—and just like his smile, full of sunshine.
