When Michael was born, his parents expected a typical delivery, but that was not the case. Both Michael and his mother endured a traumatic birth, and within his first day of life, Michael began having seizures. He was rushed to CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia), where his parents learned that their baby had suffered a perinatal stroke.
Since then, Michael has fought hard to overcome the challenges stemming from his stroke, including permanent brain damage, which caused weakness on the right side of his body, and an epilepsy diagnosis. Michael’s mother recalls that his “saving grace, which restored hope to our family,” was the early intervention he received through occupational and physical therapy, beginning when he was just three months old. She explains, “It was a gift to receive these services so quickly, giving him the best chance possible, especially at home following our time in the NICU.”
Michael’s mom also praises the therapists from The Arc Alliance, saying, “Our therapists were highly qualified, caring, and creative. They made therapy so much fun, and Michael was always excited to see them. They became part of our family. We are so grateful The Arc Alliance helped Michael get a jump start in life, teaching him to do everything he wants to do.”
Now in kindergarten, Michael is a happy child who lets nothing hold him back. His journey is a testament to resilience and the importance of early intervention in helping children thrive despite early challenges.
